Tips to Help You Keep Your Pool Water Crystal Clear

Some of us would be quick to assume the water must be new since keeping the pool that clear would require constant cleaning. However, with proper maintenance, it is possible for you to achieve that picture-perfect look for your swimming pool.
First off, why does pool water turn cloudy?
Improper levels of chlorine, an imbalance in pH and alkalinity, algae, debris, and clogged or faulty filters are the usual causes. So, make sure you remove foreign particles and algae and regularly replace your filter cartridges. The tricky part, however, is keeping the right balance of chemicals in your water.
Understanding Pool Chemistry
Keeping the right water chemistry in your pool can be really tricky. You have to know the right chemicals to use as well as their exact amount. The three basic things you need to consider for good pool water chemistry include:
- Chlorine and pH levels: This is the most common cause of cloudy or hazy water. In your swimming pool. Though pH is not associated with water cloudiness, it consumes and reduces free chlorine, making it ineffective. On the other hand, when the level of free chlorine plummets, it forms combined chlorine (called chloramine). This turns the pool water cloudy and ineffective at killing organisms like algae and other bacteria.
- High level of alkalinity (TA): High alkalinity levels can cause pH and calcium scaling, which both leads to the cloudiness of the water. Lowering the water’s alkalinity includes aeration after adding muriatic acid. This will raise the pH to the recommended levels.
- Chemical Imbalance: High levels accumulate bromine and phosphate, and imbalanced stabilizers like cyanuric acid (CYA) can also lead to cloudiness. Excessive levels of CYA can reduce free chlorine. It is important that you have the right balance of the two. You can refer to a chlorine/CTA chart to get the right levels.
So, how do you keep your pool water clear as crystal? Here are four basic tips you need to keep in mind.
Maintain the Right Chemical Levels
As mentioned earlier, maintaining the right chemical levels is crucial for keeping your pool water clean and clear. Chlorine is used to kill bacteria and germs in the water. The pH level measures the alkaline and acidity level, which influences the efficacy of the chlorine.
Pool chemistry must be checked once to twice a week in the summer, and once per one to two weeks during winter. Use a water testing kit to measure chlorine and pH levels. Chlorine should be around 1.0 to 3.0 ppm (parts per million), while pH level should range from 7.2 to 7.6. If the chlorine level is too low, then you need to add more. If the pH is too low, then you need to add acid. Sodium bisulfate and muriatic acid are the two most common acids used for pool water.
Clean the Water Filter Regularly
This piece of equipment works by filtering and removing dirt and microscopic debris from the pool, keeping the water clean. After months of filtering, however, it will start to clog up. For the filter to work properly, it must be cleaned regularly. Backwashing is the main way to clean it. This process involves allowing the water to flow in the opposite direction to clean out the filter. If the water starts to look hazy, then it is time to do the backwash.
To avoid cloudy water, take note of the normal pressure gauge reading of your swimming pool. Do a backwash when the pressure measures 5 to 7 lbs. per square inch above the normal reading.
There are three basic types of pool filters: the sand filter, cartridge filter, and DE (Diatomaceous Earth) filter. A sand filter must be replaced every few months while cartridge and DE filters should be replaced every month. For the latter, DE powder must be added after a few months while grids must be replaced every one to two years.
Pool Shock/Algaecide Weekly
Pool shock is the process of putting more chlorine (super-chlorinate) in the water to kill any lingering algae and bacteria. Experts suggest you should shock your pool once a week to keep the sanitizer level stable. It is important to not overdo it, however, as it can cause “chlorine lock.”
It is best to sanitize the water after heavy use, pool parties, and even storms to quickly kill bacteria.
Algae can make your pool water look cloudy, yellowish, or greenish. If they start to grow on the walls of the pool, then you should use an algaecide to keep them from growing further. It is best to use algaecide at least twice a month, especially during summer.
Skim Your Pool Regularly
While the filter works by removing small particles, large debris may not make it into the filtration system. It is vital that you help your filter by removing organic materials such as debris, insects, leaves, etc. from your pool. Skim your pool regularly (at least three times a week), especially if there are lots of plants and trees around.
Brushing (twice a week, before vacuum) and vacuuming (twice a week) your pool also help in the long run.
Maintain Proper Water Circulation
If the water can’t flow and circulate properly in your pool, then the filtration system will work poorly and pool chemistry can suffer. To ensure proper water circulation, run your pump at least eight hours a day. You must also clean your filter regularly and clean your skimmer basket once a week.
